Fabric is the material closest to the body. It holds in the heat from our lives like a diary, and tells the story back to us. I like the way our clothes, our curtains, our sheets become artifacts of our lives, like landscapes. Fabric is sensual, something we want to instinctively touch, because it is always touching us. Until we are gone. Used fabrics bring up feelings of loss and wonder for me, the same way I used to feel in my grandmother’s closet and her stash of fabrics and clothing patterns, unfinished projects, daydreaming. We disappear, and for a time, our mark remains in the world, in the people and places and objects whose lives we have touched in our lifetime. We eventually disappear when those relationships no longer remain- at least, not in a form we recognize. For me, there is something magical in this transition between being and non-being, kind of like the way sunrise and sunset are exquisitely beautiful times of day. It is the point of fading. The fragility and temporality of life fills me both with awe and joy, which inspires me to be more present in my own life.
