wood ash, gum arabic on birch panel
"QR" (Quick-Response) codes, a type of two-dimensional barcode, can be scanned by a smartphone in order to lead to online information (such as a website). First created in the Japanese automotive industry, QR codes are now gaining popularity in business marketing and product tracking.
This series of QR codes was painted with a homemade ink of wood ash and gum arabic. Once scanned with a viewer's smartphone, the code leads to an online image of the birch panel before the code was painted on it.
Both the code itself and the used organic material will degrade over time, rendering the piece illegible.
